The screenplay was written by Kevin Williamson , writer of Scream, and very loosely based on a popular novel of the same title by Lois Duncan. The latter film did not star any of the cast from the previous two. The film received mixed reviews from critics. After a teenager has a terrifying vision of him and his friends dying in a plane crash, he prevents the accident only to have Death hunt them down, one by one. A group of teenagers in Colorado find themselves being stalked and killed one by one by a mysterious figure with a hook, exactly one year after they covered up a friend's accidental death.
The film centers on four young friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they killed a man. The film also draws inspiration from the urban legend known as the Hook , and the s slasher films Prom Night , and The House on Sorority Row After having written Scream released the year prior , Williamson was approached to adapt Duncan's source novel by producer Erik Feig. Where Williamson's screenplay for Scream contained prominent elements of satire and self-referentiality, his adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer reworked the novel's central plot to resemble a straightforward s-era slasher film. It was also nominated for and won multiple awards. I Know What You Did Last Summer has also been parodied and referenced in popular culture,  and credited alongside Scream with revitalizing the slasher genre in the s.
